about

Two years after the release of "Objekt" which received enthusiastic reviews (Uncut, Artrocker, BBC 6), The Callas are back with their new album, produced by Jim Sclavunos.

The album is titled "Am I Vertical?" (an allusion to the poem of Sylvia Plath "I Am Vertical") and is released by Inner Ear on vinyl, cd and digital album.

Noisepop minimalism, raw garage melodies and kraut psychedelic elements, meet and create the kaleidoscopic universe of "Am I Vertical?”.

On their new album, The Callas are mixing their experimental art and film background with their addiction in pop tunes presenting an album which pervertly balances between darkness and light, innocence and sin, joy and lust.

The acquaintance with Jim Sclavunos started when he saw The Callas for the first time performing live in London and asked them to open a concert of Grinderman. When he heard the first demos of "Am I Vertical?" he happily agreed to do the production of the album. Additionally, in half of the tracks of the album Jim Sclavunos performed on drums and co-write the lyrics.

"I first met The Callas at an Artrocker event in London at which they were performing as a minimalist three-piece consisting of the brothers Aris and Lakis Ionas and Annita Polychroni. Accompanied by a moody light show, their music was a blend of fuzzed-out improv and perky punk-pop songs with a melancholic edge. Throughout the performance they kept switching instruments, and the music just became darker and stranger. Their lyrical imagery was poignant and vulgar, banal and surreal, trite and mysterious, somehow all at the same time -- while being sung by a man with one of the most peculiar accents I've heard! They invited me to collaborate with them as their producer; and as bait to lure me back to their hometown of Athens, Greece, they promised of lots of delicious Greek home-cooking -- which was mind-blowingly good, by the way!
Despite the baking-hot summer weather in Athens, the energy level surrounding this project was very high. In fact, working with them on their album was a genuine pleasure. We had only two weeks in which to record and mix the entire album, so we hit the ground running and just slammed through the tracks. Nikos Angloupas our engineer was a marvel -- very intuitive and musical in his own right; and The Callasettes, The Callas' back-up singers, were the very embodiment of girl-gang anarchy, lively and lovely.
The Callas are accomplished artists and filmmakers as well as musicians, so it was important to keep the artistic side of the band in the foreground, but have it counter-balanced with spirited, spunky, raw performances. I think that we accomplished that: it's just real cool fun in the end." -- Jim Sclavunos, London 2013

Track Name: Lustlands
Lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lust
La-la-la-la-la-lands

Land of holy joy
Trees of fairy toys
Would you like to come and join with us?

Catcher of the eye
A honey trap for flies
An anusbee’s fuzzy little fist

Lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lust
La-la-la-la-la-lands

The smell of girls and wine
The art of getting fucked
Fluttering round the rotten light of lust

A corpse, a myth and you
Desire for a clue
Insectile flesh between you hungry two

Lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lust
La-la-la-la-la-lands

We’re in the Lustlands!
Track Name: Anger
Anger
Invisible
Anger
Sinister
Anger
So horrible

When I meet you lalala
When I feel you lalala

Anger
Inflammable
Anger
A bunker hole
Anger
A dirty doll
Anger
My scary soul

Anger all around
Anger from the ground
Anger in the town
Anger the dirty crown
Track Name: East Beat
I fell, I fell, I fell

East, east beat
I came from near east
I came from near east
And it feels like this

I fell, I fell, I fell

East, east beast
I came for the feast
I came for the feast
And it feels like this

I fell, I fell, I fell

Ist, ist beast
Coming through the mist
Wir kommen. ist ein kuss
It feels like this
Track Name: Black Leather Books
I am on my own
With my leather books
Don’t need a thing
I’m living in a film

Black leather books
Black leather books
Some velvet scenes
In black leather books

I lay them on my skin
The seventh deadly sin
Can’t control my hand
Sliding down the spine

Black leather books
Black leather books
Some velvet scenes
In black leather books
Track Name: I Hate You But I Like You
I hate your earthquake walk
And the way you baby talk
I hate the things you do
And I hate the guys you screw

I hate your mom, your sister & your dad
Your facebook photos and I hate your favorite band

And I hate you
Cause I like you
And I hate you
Cause I’m like you

I hate your hipster haircut
The turn-ups on your jeans
The beatnik books you read
And your fashion magazines

I hate your mom, your sister & your dad
I hate your Ray-ban love and I hate it when you’re sad

And I hate you
Cause I like you
And I hate you
Cause I’m like you

I hate your blog
And your dirty hairy friends
I hated you from the start and I’ll hate you to the end

Oh I hate you!
Oh I hate you!
Cause I like you
Cause I like you
I’m just like you
I’m just like you
Track Name: Disaster
So many voices from the grave
A sunny picture of a rape
Give me my dirty pleasure dope
This is the end of happy hope

This city looks like an empty mouth
A marble ruin heading south

Disaster
Disaster, it happens

Cries for vengeance in my ear
Smell of feral mammal fear
The salty taste of your tears
A whipping song is all you hear

This city reeks of broken vows
Corruption, fraud and sacred cows
Disaster
Disaster, it happens
Track Name: That's You
I want to see you through a mirror
I’d like to watch you through a hole
I’ll try to reach you through your sister
I know you really want me to

& I want you
& I know you want me to want you too
Oh yeah

You are the girl who needs attention
The girl who wants to be a star
My obscure object of desire
My “belle de jour” trapped in a jar

& I want you
& I know you want me to want you too
Oh yeah

Hey, that’s you
Hey that’s you
I can’t get close to you
I can’t get over you

Hey, that’s you
Hey that’s you

You are a girl beyond redemption
Can only watch you from afar
My obscure object of desire
Hermetically sealed inside a jar

& I want you
& I know you want me to want you too

Hey, that’s you
Hey, that’s you

I can’t get close to you
I can’t get over you
I can’t get close to you
I can’t get over you
Track Name: I Wonder
What can I get, my love, I wonder
Where can I go, my love, I wonder

I wonder I wonder I wonder

How did we end up in this hole? I wonder
Where is the hope? Where is the rope? I wonder

I wonder I wonder I wonder

We’ve got no money, honey
But we’ll keep on trying
We’ve got no money, honey
But we’ll dance all night

I’m gonna lalalalalala

The future looks cold, my love
The party’s over, my love

I wonder I wonder I wonder

We’ve got no money honey
But we’ll keep on trying
We’ve got no money honey
But we’ll dance all night

Lalalalala
I wonder I wonder I wonder
Track Name: Octopus Love
Octopus love

Hey babe my octopus love
Hey babe my octopus love

And I want you to be my fail
And you need me to be your snail
Cause your arms are around my neck
And I can’t control my head
And I say hey babe

Your legs are pretty tight
They’re giving me a fight
I can’t breathe you make me dive
But it feels quite alright
And I say hey babe
Track Name: Am I Vertical?
We span the distance from nothing to something
We are the children of dirt & desire
We are the keepers of hope & disaster
We plant the seeds of eternal departure

I’ve been there
You’ve been there
Horizontal land

We are the gods forming nothing from something
We are the kids of disease & desire
We are the heirs of faith & despair
We are descendants of sadness & laughter

I’ve been there
You’ve been there
Horizontal land

Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, no!

Am I vertical? Am I vertical?
Am I vertical, nooo!
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, no!

We share in the rites of drinking & dreaming
We know the secret of giving & bleeding

I’ve been there
You’ve been there
Horizontal land

Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, no!
